My Baby is suddenly refusing to nurse. Should I give the bottle?
A baby who is truly ready to wean will almost always do so gradually, over a period of weeks or months. If your baby or toddler has been breastfeeding well and suddenly goes on a `nursing strike`, be patient. Most nursing strikes are over in a couple of days, with the baby back to breastfeeding.

Nursing strikes happen for many reasons. They are usually a temporary reaction to an external factor, although sometimes their cause is never determined. Here are some of the most common triggers of nursing strikes:
·         You`ve changed your deo, soap, perfume, lotion, etc., and you smell `different` to your baby.
·         You`ve been under stress (such as having extra company, travelling, moving, dealing with a family crisis).
·         Your baby or toddler has an illness or injury that makes nursing uncomfortable (an ear infection, a stuffy nose, thrush, a cut in the mouth).
·         Your baby has sore gums from teething.
·         You`ve recently changed your nursing patterns (started a new job, left the baby in a creche).
·         You reacted strongly when your baby bit you and the baby was frightened.

Getting over the nursing strike and getting your baby back to the breast takes patience and persistence. Get medical attention if an illness or injury seems to have caused the strike. See if you can get some extra help with your household chores and older children so that you can spend lots of time with the baby. Stop and comfort your baby if he or she gets upset when you try to nurse.
Remember that your baby isn`t rejecting you, and that breastfeeding will almost always get back to normal with a little time.

Friends have you noticed that though there is so much of encouragement towards breastfeeding, you rarely get to see women practicing it nowadays.... everyone is busy bottle feeding their kids with formula. Though there is enough evidence of the benefits of breastfeeding for the child as well as the mother and enough documentation of the ill-effects of bottle feeding formula yet women knowingly do the wrong thing for their babies?????
I for one have experienced both the situations.
For my 1st child I tried breastfeeding but as expected the beginning few days are difficulty in many ways- new mom with tiny baby at hand, trauma of child birth, the usually initiation of lactation difficulty, etc, and I gave up breastfeeding in a month s time and resorted to bottle feeding with formula (but I still feel guilty of depriving my 1st born of the unlimited benefits of Breast milk- giving her my antibodies so that she can fight effectively against common illnesses, low risk for asthma, low risk for obesity, diabetes...)

With my 2nd baby I was determined to breastfeed come what may (!). And I did stick to that promise. But guys it was not an easy task!!!! NO SIR NOT AT ALL....
Breast feeding though a natural process has its own share of hiccups- it takes a minimum of 1-2 days to almost 10-15 days for one to properly start producing milk, during this period you see your tiny baby trying relentlessly to fill its tummy by constantly suckling, crying, not sleeping, etc. all this can disgust you and you can easily move to bottle feeding; then there is out of the world pain discomfort due to nipple cracking, milk let down, engorgement, etc. this can further more discourage you.
But believe me once you get past these initial hurdles there is nothing like breast feeding as it is clean, safe, immediate, convenient, healthy, wholesome,….
With my 1st born there was this huge set of bottles, formula containers, hot water to be carried everywhere. Then the washing sterilization of bottles; disturbed night sleep for both the child and me as I had to prepare the feed the child had to wait and then there was this spending good amount of funds on formula, bottles...
But now with my 2nd child once I got past those difficult initial 3 months I find that my child and I are in a very comfortable and happy situation with breastfeeding. Whenever the child demands he gets his feed, when he is cranky he calms down with feeding, when he is sleepy he easily drifts into sleep with feeding. In the night I don’t even have to sit up to feed, while lying down he takes his feed and drifts of into sleep and I also fall back into sleep right away, which helps both of us get enough sleep.
Not to mention he is healthy, happy and falls less ill. More over now if I plan to go out I can just pick him up and leave with an extra set for change and some wipes. You know how convenient it is to breast feed babies in public places nowadays! Every big market, shop, mall has a secluded place or a designated place for women with little babies and all of us have cars so we can even feeds babies on way to our destination due to which the child remains calm for at least 2hrs.

Hence, my friends I urge you to practice breast feeding your baby for the 1st year of his/her life by this was you would have given the most precious gift ‘A Healthy Start To Life’ to your child.

The following information is written for women who are breastfeeding, or are pregnant and considering breastfeeding their baby.

A woman's lifestyle, including diet and other behaviors, can have an affect on her breast milk, and therefore on her baby. It's important for all nursing mothers to take care of themselves so they can provide the best care to their babies. This includes getting enough rest and proper nutrition so you have enough energy to take care of your baby and avoid illness. Some women think that when they are sick, they should not breastfeed. But, most common illnesses, such as colds, flu, or diarrhea, can't be passed through breast milk. In fact, if a mother is sick, her breast milk will have antibodies in it. These antibodies will help protect her baby from getting the same sickness. Here are some other lifestyle issues that affect breast milk:

Viruses

A few viruses can pass through breast milk. HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is one of them. Women who are HIV positive should not breastfeed. Also, women with Hepatitis C may be able to transmit the virus through breast milk, but it is not certain. However, bleeding or cracked nipples on the breast of a woman withHepatitis C puts a breastfeeding infant at higher risk for getting the virus.

Diet

Nutrition 

Breastfeeding mothers who have generally good diets produce healthy breast milk for their babies, even when they don't eat well at times. But, chronically undernourished women who have had diets very low in 
vitamins and minerals, and low stores in their bodies may produce milk that is lower than normal in some vitamins, especially vitamins A, D, B6, or B12. These breastfeeding mothers can help the vitamin levels in their milk return to normal by improving their diets or by taking vitamin supplements. It is recommended that nursing mothers take in about 2700 calories every day (about 500 calories more than a non-pregnant, non-nursing woman).

Fluids 

Many women think they h
ave to drink a lot of fluids to have a good milk supply. This is actually untrue. A nursing woman does, however, need to drink enough fluids to stay well hydrated for her own health and strength to give her baby the best care she can. Always drink when you are thirsty, which is your body's signal that you need fluid. You can make it easy to remember to get enough fluid, if you drink a glass of water or a nutritious beverage (milk or juice) every time you feed your baby.
Caffeine 

Many breastfeeding women wonder about how caffeine will affect their baby. Results from studies show that, while excessive caffeine intake (more than five 5 ounce cups of coffee per day) can cause the baby to be fussy and not able to 
sleep
 well, moderate caffeine intake (fewer than five 5 ounce cups) usually doesn't cause a problem for most breastfeeding babies.
Allergies 

Sometimes a baby may have a reaction to something the mother eats (like spicy foods, foods that can cause gas, or dairy products). Symptoms of an
allergy
 to something in the mother's diet include diarrhea, rash, fussiness, gas, dry skin, green stools with mucus, or the baby pulling up his/her knees and screaming. This doesn't mean the baby is allergic to the mother's milk. If the mother stops eating whatever is bothering her baby, the problem usually goes away on its own.
Here's how to tell if something you are eating is upsetting your baby:

Remember:
 It takes about two to six hours for your body to digest and absorb the food you eat and pass it into your breast milk.
·         So, if you eat dinner at 5:00 P.M., and your baby shows the symptoms listed above around 9:00 P.M., think about what you ate for dinner. To be sure if those foods are causing the problem, you will have to eat them again and see if he/she has the same reaction.
·         If your baby seems very fussy, try keeping a record of what you eat and drink.
·         Bring the record to your health care provider to talk about a possible link between certain foods and your baby's symptoms.
·         If you think a particular food is causing a problem, stop eating it for a while and see if your baby reacts better. You can always try later to introduce that food again into your diet in small amounts. If your baby doesn't seem to react to it anymore, you could add more the next time.

Sometimes a baby can be born with a condition called primary lactase deficiency or with galactosemia, in which they can't tolerate breast milk. This is because their bodies can't break down lactose, a sugar found in the milk of humans and animals. Symptoms include diarrhea and vomiting. Babies with severe galactosemia may have liver problems, malnutrition, or mental retardation. Babies with these conditions must be fed formula that comes from plants, such as soy milk or a special galactose-free formula.


Nutrient by Nutrient Why Breast is Best

Milk is milk, right? Mammals make it (humans are mammals) and babies drink it. There's more to the story than that. Each species of mammal makes a unique kind of milk, which meets all the nutritional requirements of its offspring at the beginning of life. Each species' milk has specific qualities that insure the survival of the young in a particular environment. This principle is known as the biological specificity of milk. Mother seals, for example, make a high-fat milk because baby seals need lots of body fat to survive in cold water. Since brain development is crucial to the survival of humans, human milk provides nutrients for rapid brain growth.
No matter what animal it comes from, milk contains the basic nutritional elements of fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Let's look at each one of these nutrients in human milk, comparing them to the same nutrients in formula or cow milk, so you can further appreciate how your milk is custom-made to meet the needs of your baby.
Unique nutrition for unique humans. As hormones levels change in the days after birth, the mother's body starts to make more plentiful amounts of milk. Colostrum gradually changes into mature milk--the stuff babies have been thriving on for thousands of years. Milk's basic ingredients are fat, proteins, lactose, vitamins, minerals, and water. This is true of milk from all kinds of mammals. Yet, the proportions of these ingredients differ, as do the kinds of protein and fat. This is what makes each species' milk uniquely suited to its young. It's also why cow's milk and cow's milk-based formulas are not the ideal food for human infants.
HIGH QUALITY PROTEIN
Protein is a prime example of how human milk is unique nutrition for human babies. Human milk is low in protein, at least when compared with the milk of other species, especially cow's milk. This isn't a nutritional deficiency; there are good reasons for this. Human infants are designed to grow slowly. While it's important for humans to develop strong bodies, even more important is brain development and the learning of social skills. The experiences that shape the brain come from close contact between mother and baby when baby is held and carried. If human infants doubled their birthweight in less than 50 days the way baby calves do, and then continued growing, how could their mothers carry them and talk to them and keep them close? Baby cows need to learn where to find the best grass in the meadow; baby humans need to learn how to work with others so that everyone's needs get met.
Though the protein content of human milk is generally low, the types of amino acids that make up these proteins are important. One particular amino acid, taurine, is found in large amounts in human milk. Studies show that taurine has an important role in the development of the brain and the eyes. The body can't convert other kinds of amino acids into taurine, so its presence in human milk is significant--so significant that some formula manufacturers have begun adding it to artificial baby milks.
If you let milk stand out of the refrigerator and sour, you will see that milk proteins fall into two categories, curds and whey. (Remember Miss Muffet?) The curd portion, the casein proteins, are the white clots; the liquid is the whey. Cow's milk is mostly casein protein, which forms a rubbery, hard-to-digest curd in babies' tummies. Human milk has more whey than curd, and the curds that are formed are softer and more quickly digested. Breastfed babies get hungry sooner than babies who are formula-fed because human milk proteins are digested so efficiently. It doesn't take as much energy to digest human milk as it does to digest formula. Frequent feedings also ensure that human babies get lots of attention from their mothers.
SELF-DIGESTING FATS
There's another reason why babies digest human milk so quickly: the fat in human milk comes with an enzyme, lipase, that breaks the fat down into smaller globules so this important nutrient can be better absorbed into the bloodstream. Fat is a valuable source of energy for babies, so the presence of lipase makes the fat in human milk more available. This is one of the reasons human milk is so good for premature babies, who need lots of energy to grow but whose digestive systems are very immature.
A changing nutrient for changing needs. The fat content of human milk changes constantly. Typically, fat levels are low at the beginning of a feeding and high at the end. Babies nurse eagerly to get the low-fat, thirst-quenching foremilk, then slow down and linger over the high-fat dessert at the end of their meal. Babies who nurse again soon after the end of the last feeding get more high-fat milk, so babies who breastfeed more frequently during a growth spurt get more calories. Longer intervals between feedings bring down the fat content of the milk stored in the breast. This nutritional fact of human milk is one of the many reasons why the rigid 3 to 4 hour scheduled style of feeding is biologically incorrect.
Smarter fats. The special kind of fat in human milk is important to brain development. As newborn babies grow, the nerves are covered with a substance called myelin which helps the nerves transmit messages to other nerves throughout the brain and body. To develop high-quality myelin, the body needs certain types of fatty acids--linoleic and linolenic--which are found in large amounts in human milk.
VITAMINS AND MINERALS
The vitamins and minerals listed on the formula can are no match for those in the milk made by mom, even if milligram by milligram comparisions suggest otherwise. When formula researchers want to know how much of a particular vitamin or mineral babies need each day, they look first at how much of that nutrient is present in human milk and how much milk a baby of a given age takes in a day. But just doing the math doesn't tell the whole story. More important than the amounts of nutrients in the milk is the amount that is available for the infant to use, a nutrient principle called bioavailability. The bioavailability of a nutrient is influenced by many factors, including its chemical form and the presence of other substances.
The three important minerals calcium, phosphorus, and iron are present in breastmilk at lower levels than in formula, but in breastmilk these minerals are present in forms that have high bioavailability. For example, 50 to 75 percent of the iron in breastmilk is absorbed by the baby. With formula, as little as four percent of the iron is absorbed into baby's bloodstream. To make up for the low bioavailability of factory-added vitamins and minerals, formula manufactures raise the concentrations. Sounds reasonable, right? If only half gets absorbed by the body, put twice as much into the can. Yet, this nutrient manipulation may have a metabolic price.
Baby's immature intestines are required to dispose of the excess. Meanwhile, the excess unabsorbed minerals (especially iron) can upset the "ecology of the gut," interfering with the growth of healthful bacteria and allowing harmful bacteria to flourish. This is another reason formula-fed infants have harder, more unpleasant smelling stools.
To enhance the bioavailability of nutrients, breastmilk contains facilitators - substances that enhance the absorption of other nutrients. For example, vitamin C in human milk increases the absorption of iron. Zinc absorption is also enhanced by other factors in human milk. In an interesting experiment, researchers added equal amounts of iron and zinc to samples of human milk, formula, and cow'd milk, and fed them to adult volunteers. More of the nutrients in the human-milk sample got into the bloodstream compared to the formula and cow's milk. In essence, breastmilk puts nutrients where they belong - in baby's blood, not in baby's bowels.
HORMONES AND ENZYMES
Every year medical journal articles describe more valuable substances discovered in human milk. Scientists are only beginning to write the story on other factors in human milk that may be important to baby's growth and development. For example, other enzymes besides lipase are available to aid infant digestion. Epidermal growth factor, present in human milk in significant amounts, may promote the development of tissues in the digestive tract and elsewhere. Other hormones in milk may influence a baby's metabolism, growth, and physiology. The effects may be subtle, but they may also have far-reaching implications. Being breastfed has advantages that reach into adulthood. Science is only beginning to learn what these benefits are.

What's in Breast Milk


The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) strongly recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life and that breastfeeding continue for at least 12 months.  It is optimal for both babies and mothers.  For babies it can protect against infections and reduce the rates of later health problems including diabetes, obesity, and asthma. 
For mothers breastfeeding helps the uterus to contract and bleeding to cease more quickly after delivery.  Breastfeeding can reduce the risk of breast and ovarian cancer and also provides a great way for mothers to bond with their babies. 
The advantages of breastfeeding are numerous.  Breast milk is ultimately the best source of nutrition for a new baby.  Many components in breast milk help protect your baby against infection and disease.  The proteins in breast milk are more easily digested than in formula or cow’s milk.  The calcium and iron in breast milk are also more easily absorbed. 
The following is a brief overview of the components of breast milk and the nutrients they provide for your baby.

Proteins

Human milk contains two types of proteins: whey and casein.  Approximately 60% is whey, while 40% is casein.  This balance of the proteins allows for quick and easy digestion.  If artificial milk, also called formula, has a greater percentage of casein, it will be more difficult for the baby to digest.  Approximately 60-80% of all protein in human milk is whey protein.  These proteins have great infection-protection properties. 

Listed below are specific proteins that are found in breast milk and their benefits: 
·         Lactoferrin inhibits the growth of iron-dependent bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract.  This inhibits certain organisms, such as coliforms and yeast, that require iron.
·         Secretory IgA also works to protect the infant from viruses and bacteria, specifically those that the baby, mom, and family are exposed to.  It also helps to protect against E. Coli and possibly allergies.  Other immunoglobulins, including IgG and IgM, in breast milk also help protect against bacterial and viral infections.  Eating fish can help increase the amount of these proteins in your breast milk.
·         Lysozyme is an enzyme that protects the infant against E. Coli and Salmonella. It also promotes the growth of healthy intestinal flora and has anti-inflammatory functions.
·         Bifidus factor supports the growth of lactobacillus.  Lactobacillus is a beneficial bacteria that protects the baby against harmful bacteria by creating an acidic environment where it cannot survive

Fats

Human milk also contains fats that are essential for the health of your baby.  It is necessary for brain development, absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, and is a primary calorie source.  Long chain fatty acids are needed for brain, retina, and nervous system development.  They are deposited in the brain during the last trimester of pregnancy and are also found in breast milk. 

Vitamins

The amount and types of vitamins in breast milk is directly related to the mother’s vitamin intake.  This is why it is essential that she gets adequate nutrition, including vitamins.  Fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E, and K, are all vital to the infant’s health.  Water-soluble vitamins such as vitamin C, riboflavin, niacin, and panthothenic acid are also essential.  Because of the need for these vitamins, many healthcare providers and lactation consultants will have nursing mothers continue on prenatal vitamins.

Carbohydrates

Lactose is the primary carbohydrate found in human milk.  It accounts for approximately 40% of the total calories provided by breast milk.  Lactose helps to decrease the amount of unhealthy bacteria in the stomach, which improves the absorption of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium.  It helps to fight disease and promotes the growth of healthy bacteria in the stomach. 

Breast Milk is Best

Breast milk has the perfect combination of proteins, fats, vitamins, and carbohydrates.  There is nothing better for the health of your baby.  Leukocytes are living cells that are only found in breast milk.  They help fight infection.  It is the antibodies, living cells, enzymes, and hormones that make breast milk ideal.  These cannot be added to formula. 
Though some women ultimately are not able to breastfeed, many whothink they cannot actually are able to breastfeed.  Lactation consultants are able to provide support to women learning to breastfeed.  For those who are not able to breastfeed, milk banks or donor milk may be an alternative. 


What's in breast milk?

What's in breast milk depends on when it's being made and for whom. One of the wonderful characteristics of human milk is the way it changes to meet your baby's needs as he grows. The breast milk a mother produces for her premature baby differs from the milk she would produce for a full-term newborn, and that differs from the milk she'll have for her 6-month-old baby. All breast milk, however, contains exactly the nutritional and protective components needed most by each baby at every age.

Colostrum is the first pale yellow milk your breasts produce after giving birth. (You may have noticed beads of colostrum on your nipples in the last weeks of pregnancy.) It's so high in antibodies that some people call it a baby's first immunization. It's higher in protein, minerals, salt, vitamin A, nitrogen, white blood cells, and certain antibodies, and has less fat and sugar than mature milk. Sinus infections refer to the inflammation of the para-nasal cavities caused by irritation of the sinus membranes. When the sinus cavities get irritated, they become blocked/congested which causes unbearable pain.
When the sinuses are infected, they overproduce mucus that will stagnate and result in pressure obstructing proper drainage and the free flow of air.

Sinusitis refers to an inflammation of the sinus passages caused by a viral, bacterial or fungal infection. Over 35 million people (children as well as adults) suffer from sinusitis annually.

Inflammatory and Infectious Causes
Viral, Bacterial and Fungal infections cause the delicate mucus membrane linings the nasal passages and sinus cavities to swell, and in some cases block the sinus openings called ostium. If this ostium (opening) is blocked, air and mucus secretions collect and cause pressure on the sinus cavity walls. This pressure is one of the main reasons why we have pain during sinusitis.
One needs to remember mucus is an excellent environment for bacteria and if the mucus is not cleared quickly, bacteria can infect the sinuses and in severe cases result in the formation of abscess.
  • Viral infection - This type of sinus infection is the most common as it may be caused by millions of different strains and viruses. It is also known as an upper respiratory infection (cold or flu). This infection tends to last for a fort night with symptoms similar to a common cold, i.e. a runny nose, congestion or even a sore throat with accompanying post nasal drip and coughing. If left untreated a viral infection may develop into a bacterial infection such as chronic sinusitis. 
  • As there is no cure for the common cold, one suffering from a sinus infection may often be treated with antibiotics in a bid to prevent the viral infection from progressing and developing into a bacteria infection.
  • Bacterial infection - This type of infection is most often caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. These types of bacteria are commonly found in the respiratory tract of healthy people and will only result in a bacterial sinus infection when ones immune system is low or has been weakened. Other, less common sinusitis causing bacteria include Staphylococcus aureus and Branhamella catarhallis. Swimming in contaminated water may also result in a bacterial infection of the sinuses.
  • Fungal Infection - Fungi are plant like organisms which are unable to produce their own food. They are usually found living harmlessly in our sinuses, however when the bodies resistance is low, they may become harmful. Their usual diet consists of dead, organic matter, however in certain instances fungi may feed on living organisms such as the delicate mucus membranes that line your sinus and nasal passages resulting in an inflammation of these membranes and a possible fungal infection. Aspergillus fumigatus  is one such fungus. 
Our moist, dark and warm nasal passages and sinus cavities provide fungi with the ideal environment in which to thrive and propagate (which can occur in the absence of food or light).
Fungus includes- molds, yeasts, mushrooms and puffballs.
There are two types of fungal infections: 

(1) Invasive fungal sinusitis is commonly caused by Aspergillus Fungus and is generally not caused by an allergen (minute particles which causes allergic reactions). It is usually found in patients whose immune systems are severely suppressed (which may be due to AIDS, excessive alcohol use or even diabetes mellitus).
Invasive fungal sinusitis can be differentiated from Non-invasive fungal sinusitis in that its symptoms include:

The types of Invasive fungal sinusitis include:
Chronic indolent sinusitis
This occurs when fungi invades a persons body who is not suffering from an immune deficiency or severely weekend immune system If left untreated symptoms may include: -Chronic headaches-Facial Swelling
Fulminant sinusitis
This type of sinusitis occurs when fungi invades a persons body who has a severely deficient immune system.
In severe cases the fungi may destroy the sinuses as well as invade and cause harm to the bony cavities that protect the eyeball or brain
 (2) Noninvasive fungal sinusitis is commonly found in patients who suffer with asthma, nasal polyps, chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis and has the ability to manifest itself through tissue destruction.
The types of non invasive fungal sinusitis include:
 Allergic fungal sinusitis This occurs when a person experiences an allergic reaction to inhaled environmental fungi floating in the air.Symptoms may include:-Thick, fungal debris may develop in the sinus cavities.
Mycetoma fungal sinusitis This type of fungus may produce clumps of spores in the maxillary or sphenoid sinuses.
Symptoms may include:
-Sinus discomfort 
-Slight inflammation of the membrane linings in the sinus cavities.
  • Allergies - Do you have swollen or itchy eyes, a runny nose, constant sneezing or even a sore throat. All these symptoms can be a sign that you have allergies. An allergic reaction occurring in the nasal passages and sinus cavities may result in swelling and inflammation of the mucus membranes that line these areas. This swelling and inflammation causes a blockage in the openings of the sinus cavities making it an ideal area in which fungi, bacteria or viruses can thrive and propagate.
Structural or Anatomical Causes
  • Nasal Polyps - Nasal polyps occur when the connective tissue matrix that keeps the mucus membrane linings of the nose intact becomes damaged. This damaged lining (which is no longer attached to the underlying tissue) starts filling with mucus, causing it to sag and develop into a "nasal polyp". They are usually benign growths that are very resilient to surgery. 
  • Any Inflammation or Allergy affecting the delicate mucus membranes of the nasal passages and sinus cavities will aggravate the nasal polyps causing them to swell more and block the opening to the sinuses thereby promoting the growth of bacteria, viruses or fungi. Nasal polyps are more prevalent in middle aged men and asthmatics and appear jelly-like and opaque to white in color.
  • Deviated Septum - The septum is a large cartilaginous bone dividing the right and left nostrils. Certain injuries to this part, which may be due to a broken nose, playing water polo or any other injury to the nasal area can obstruct mucus drainage and breathing and therefore lead to sinusitis. An operation may however be performed to correct a deviated septum.
  • Turbinates - The nasal passages contain bony projections called turbinates whose main function is to filter and warm the air that passes through these passages. When an irritation of the nasal passages occurs, these processes become inflamed and may swell causing an obstruction of mucus flow and if left untreated lead to a sinus infection.
  • Concha Bullosa - This bubble or balloon shaped structure tends to develop on the middle turbinate and can exert pressure on the adjacent tissue thereby causing irritation, sinus pain and nasal blockage. This condition is usually symptom free and may be treated by endoscopic sinus surgery in severe cases.
Behavioural or Life-style related risks
  • Frequent flying or scuba diving results in changing altitudes and can not only cause but also make current sinus infections worse. Different altitudes and air pressures result in an inflammation of the paranasal and frontal sinus cavities. In severe cases bleeding of the nasal mucus linings may also occur due to the inflammation.
  • Frequent dental work may cause damage to the delicate sinus cavities which lie directly above the upper teeth.
  • Over usage of nasal decongestants may cause initial drying out of the excess mucus, however the bodies normal reaction to these dry nasal passages is to produce more mucus thereby promoting the development of sinusitis.
  • Swimming in chlorinated water may cause an irritation and inflammation of the mucus membrane linings making a person more susceptible to a bacterial invasion. The water also results in the cilia (hair like structures in the nasal passages responsible for transporting mucus) performing poorly thereby reducing mucus drainage.
  • Pregnancy causes hormonal changes to occur in a women's body which may lead to an increase in mucus production and post nasal drip. If sinusitis does occur it is always best to consult a doctor on which medication you may use as not to harm the baby.

Birth control pills may cause similar sinusitis symptoms.
  • When a person is hospitalized for a head injury a nasogastric tube is usually inserted into the nasal passages which may cause damage and inflammation to the delicate mucus membranes making these linings highly susceptible to sinusitis causing bacteria and viruses.
  • diet consisting of refined foods and dairy products such as milk or cheese causes an allergic reaction and swelling of the mucus membranes in certain sinus suffers which promotes the formulation of mucus in both persistent and chronic sinusitis.
  • Certain medications may predispose one to sinusitis, and it is always best to consult your doctor to find out if any of the medications you are on increase the likelihood of you developing sinusitis.
  • As one develops from childhood and adolescence to adulthood, the likelihood of them developing sinusitis increases. Children who have had their adenoids and tonsils removed are also more likely to succumb to sinusitis.
  • Working around children may increase your risk and increase the severity of contracting sinusitis. Environmental Causes
  • Dust contains dust mites which are one of the main culprits causing allergic rhinitis. If you are allergic to dust it is important that you remove any carpets which trap and hold dust. You should also ensure your house and furniture is spotless.

Pulsatilla (windflower): When the head pain is worse when lying down and in a warm room and is better in cool air, this medicine should be considered. The sinusitis may begin after being over heated. Stooping, sitting, rising from lying down, and eating can aggravate the head pain, which is often in the front part of the head and accompanied with digestive problems. They get some relief from slow walking in the open air or by wrapping the head tightly in a bandage. This condition is commonly experienced when the child is in school or the adult is at work. The nasal discharge is often thick and yellow or green.
Silicea: These children usually have a chronically stuffed nose. They have a sense as though their head would burst. The head pain tends to be worse in one eye, usually the right. It is aggravated by mental exertion (students tend to get sinusitis while studying for an exam). Cold air, moving the head, light or noise can also aggravate the head pain. It is relieved by wrapping the head warmly and tightly or by applying heat.
Spigella (pinkroot): People who develop sinusitis with a sharp pain that is worse on the left side may need this medicine. They tend to get sinusitis after exposure to cold or cold, wet weather. They feel pain from warmth or when they stoop or bend the head forward, and they feel some relief by cold applications or from washing with cold water.
