Laryngitis(Hoarseness)-Full Picture

Laryngitis ( Hoarseness )

An inflammation in the voice box or larynx causes hoarseness in the voice and in some cases the complete loss of the voice-as the larynx is the organ affected, the condition is known as laryngitis. Commonly occurring with other upper respiratory tract infections, the condition known as laryngitis has symptoms such as soreness and scratchiness in the throat of the affected individual, and affected patients usually also develop signs of a Fever. A dry and barking type of  cough typically accompanies the sounds produced in the throats of people with laryngitis. Several days may pass before full vocal recovery is restored in individuals who have entirely lost their voice.
The condition known as croup is probably involved if the cough and hoarseness brings about any difficulty in breathing. The condition known as croup is especially common in many children; the more severe forms of this disorder can be alarming to a parent as an affected child gasps for air in a desperate manner. Breathing normally is rendered more difficult by the persistent presence of  anxity and fear in the child. Individuals affected by vocal hoarseness that does not disappear within a week must seek professional help, this is suggested as the presence of a tumor or an enlargement of the thyroid gland can bring about similar symptoms.
One type of symptom also found during Infections of the throat or the sinuses   are often followed by cases of the acute form of laryngitis-which itself is brought on by the usual causative organisms and factors as the common cold   and pathogens like the bacteria and many types of  viruses. Recurring hoarseness and chronic cases of laryngitis can also be caused by the overuse of the voice, as stressing out the vocal chords creates a predisposition for developing laryngitis. It is important not to strain the vocal chords repeatedly by speaking or shouting for long periods of time, great stress is also placed on the vocal chords if a person yells excessively, or if an individual takes part in long sessions of singing or lecturing. The larynx is also predisposed to many types of infections by  smoking heavily, similar effects can be induced by inhaling other irritating toxins-inhaling polluted air and cigarette smoke are important factors in the development of laryngitis.
CAUSES OF HOARSENESS
Hoarseness usually does not last long and does not necessarily signify a serious condition. The disorder makes the voice sound raspy, rough or strained because of changes related to the vocal folds that produce the sounds of the voice box, or larynx. However, hoarseness that lasts longer than two weeks could indicate an underlying disease and should be checked out with a doctor.
SPEAKING
Speaching, loudly cheering or crying may cause hoarseness. Damage to the voice can also result from raising or lowering voice pitch, talking or singing without adequate diaphragm support, talking loudly or fast or using words forcefully. The Cleveland Clinic notes that using the voice too much, too loudly or improperly over extended periods of time causes hoarseness.
ALLERGIES
Allergies cause swelling of the nasal tissues, which can affect the voice. Allergies also increase nasal drainage, leading to a constant clearing of the throat that can irritate vocal cords and cause hoarseness.
INFECTION
The common cold and upper respiratory viral infections can cause hoarseness. Persistent coughing and clearing the throat can lead to hoarseness. Acute laryngitis often occurs with upper respiratory infection and can cause a rough, harsh voice.

Nodules, or growths, can cause vocal cord nerves to lose their function, resulting in vocal cord paralysis, according to KidsHealth.org. Nodules can be caused by repetitive coughing from respiratory infections.
ACID REFLUX
Many patients with symptoms similar to allergies may have acid reflux disease. Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus and into the throat, causing a burning sensation in the chest and throat, and sometimes bringing on a sour taste from the acid in the throat. Acid reflux disease is also called gastro-esophageal reflux disease. People with the disease have bouts of heartburn or acid indigestion on a regular basis. This can damage the esophageal lining, leading to hoarseness. Medication is necessary to prevent acid reflux and avoid further damage.
IRRITANTS
Smoke inhalation causes hoarseness, including smoking tobacco or accidentally inhaling smoke. Environmental irritants and low humidity may also cause hoarseness. Excess alcohol consumption can irritate the throat and cause periods of hoarseness as well.
DISEASE
Tumors, including lung cancer, can lead to hoarseness. Cancer of the larynx, lymphoma, thyroid cancer and tumors in the head, neck or chest may affect the voice. Stroke, Parkinson's disease, motor neuron disease and myasthenia gravis, a chronic condition of muscle weakness, may lead to hoarseness.
CAUSES OF CHRONIC HOARSENESS
HYPOTHYROIDISM
The thyroid gland is located in the neck in close proximity to the vocal cords. Low thyroid function, or hypothyroidism, is a condition where the thyroid gland produces too little thyroid hormone. Sometimes, the developing disease process creates pressure or inflammation in the throat, causing a chronic hoarse voice. Correcting the underlying thyroid hormone imbalance can alleviate this symptom.
POLYPS AND NODULES
Growths on the vocal cords, either nodules or polyps, can arise due to injury or persistent irritation. Nodules form mainly from frequent misuse of the voice, such as shouting and loud singing. Polyps can form because of chronic allergies, cigarette smoke and other inhaled irritants, GERD or chronic low thyroid function. Both nodules and polyps lead to a chronic hoarse voice. Merck Manuals Medical Library reports that most nodules will resolve after voice abuse stops. Polyps usually require surgical removal in order to cure the hoarseness.
LARYNGEAL CANCER
Cancer of the voice box, or larynx, is a less common, but serious cause of chronic hoarseness. The location of the tumor dictates the symptom picture. Tumors on the vocal cords, rather than above or below them, tend to have hoarseness as an early sign. Abuse of alcohol and smoking are risk factors for laryngeal cancer. Over 95 percent of cases are in smokers, says the Merck Manuals Medical Library. Anyone with hoarseness of more than three weeks duration should have a medical examination to rule out cancer of the larynx.
CAUSES OF HOARSENESS IN INFANTS
Anything that seems to affect the breathing of an infant can be alarming, including hoarseness without an obvious cause. While there is often a simple explanation, any hoarseness in a young infant should be addressed by a pediatrician. Infants are particularly susceptible to illness and infection and it is important to rule these out as causes for your baby's hoarseness.
EXCESSIVE CRYING
Excessive crying is a common cause of hoarseness in infants. While all babies cry to convey their needs, some cry more than others, such as those suffering from colic. Crying for an extended period of time can cause the vocal chords to swell, resulting in a hoarse voice. Most babies will grow out of excessive crying on their own as long as there is no underlying medical cause. Once the persistent crying has stopped, your child's hoarseness will usually clear up on its own.
VOCAL CHORD NODULES
In some cases, excessive use of the voice, including crying, can result in vocal chord nodules, which are callous-type growths that can appear on over-worked vocal chords. These nodules keep the vocal chords from closing properly, which causes hoarseness. Treating vocal cord nodules in infants can be difficult, as the treatment involves stopping the behavior that is causing the nodules to form--in the case of infants, excessive crying. The infant may simply have to outgrow the crying, but a doctor should always be consulted.
ILLNESS
Any illness that involves congestion and post-nasal drip can cause hoarseness. Even if your child has a simple cold, mucus draining down the throat can irritate the vocal chords. While this isn't dangerous for your child, it is uncomfortable. Try clearing her nostrils with a bulb syringe to help her breathe easier. Any hoarseness associated with an illness should clear when the illness does.
REFLUX
Many babies suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease, more commonly known as acid reflux. This condition occurs when stomach acids enter the esophagus and cause a painful burning sensation. Severe or frequent acid reflux can affect the vocal chords and cause your child to become hoarse. It is important to speak to your pediatrician if you suspect your baby is suffering from reflux, as it can impact his eating and sleeping habits. There are medications that can be prescribed as well as diet changes that can ease the reflux symptoms.
ALLERGIES
If your child has allergies that cause her to become congested, this congestion could cause her to become hoarse. As with illnesses, post-nasal drip from allergies can irritate the vocal chords. Some allergies can also cause the vocal chords to swell. It is important to identify what your child is allergic to as soon as possible to prevent the potential of a more severe allergic reaction. There are allergy tests that can aide in discerning this, so speak to your pediatrician.
WHAT CAUSES HOARSENESS IN CHILDREN?
If your child's voice suddenly sounds husky, scratchy or weak, it's possible that he is suffering from hoarseness. Hoarseness is most often caused by inflammation to the larynx. However, other conditions may have caused your child's hoarseness. A visit to your pediatrician is the best way to determine the exact cause.
OVERUSE OF THE VOICE
If your child is loudly singing, yelling, talking non-stop, or straining her voice, it can cause her to become hoarse, according to Kids Health from Nemours. If she does these activities repeatedly, without allowing her vocal cords to rest and repair themselves, she can end up with callouses, or nodules that cause her voice to chronically be hoarse.
PROLONGED CRYING
Medline Plus reports that excessive crying can cause temporary hoarseness in children because of vocal cord irritation. If this is the case, your child will need to rest his voice in order to restore it. A humidifier or drinking fluids can help your child's throat feel better if it is sore after a bout of crying.
COUGHING
Coughing may also irritate the vocal chords and lead to hoarseness in children. If this is the case, treating the source of the cough is your best option for relieving hoarseness. If hoarseness continues for more than a week after other symptoms have passed, consult your pediatrician to check on other possible causes.
ALLERGIES
Allergies can produce coughing that can irritate vocal cords, but it can also cause inflammation or a post-nasal drip that is the source of irritation. If your child is old enough to understand, advise him that he'll need to restrict use of his voice to allow his vocal cords to heal. Even whispering can cause additional strain and prolong hoarseness, according to MedlinePlus.
GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX
Gastro-esophageal reflux, commonly referred to as GERD, can be a source of hoarseness in children. Again, this condition must be treated itself before the hoarseness can be treated. Once the GERD is under control, your pediatrician may advise your child to avoid certain substances, such as caffeinated or carbonated beverages, as they can cause additional irritation to the vocal cords and prolong hoarseness.
WARNING
If hoarseness in your child persists for longer than a week or doesn't appear to be tied to another condition, it is best to consult your family doctor for a proper diagnosis. If your doctor is unable to determine the source of your child's hoarseness, she may refer you to an ENT, or Ear-Nose-Throat, specialist.

SUPPLEMENTS AND HERBS
The use of supplemental zinc lozenges can alleviate the symptoms of a sore throat and this compound will help support and mobilize an effective immune system response to pathogens in the throat. Viruses and bacteria that have invaded the throat can also be dealt with using throat sprays which contain the seed extracts of the grapefruit-this herbal extract will help eliminate all pathogens accumulating in the throat. The antibiotic properties of the grapefruits must be used effectively and this herbal extract is also available in the form of a liquid herbal extract or if preferred it can also be taken in the form of herbal tablets.
Immune system functioning can be boosted and restored through the use of high doses of the vitamin C, similar in dosage strengths to those used during the treatment of other infections, this vitamin must be taken to doses that the bowel can tolerate at any one time without adverse symptoms. To soothe and heal the irritated mucus membranes and to support the action of the immune system, supplements of the vitamin A are also strongly recommended for all patients suffering from laryngitis.
Since antibiotics are used during the treatment period, there is a loss of intestinal friendly bacteria, this loss can be replaced by supplements of the Lactobacillus acidophilus bacterium as the normal intestinal bacteria complement is vital to maintain health in the body.
The following herbs and herbal combinations can help in the purification of the blood, they will fight back infection from different pathogens and they will also help in bringing some alleviation from different forms of allergies induced by the laryngitis in the affected individual.
Garlic- An effective herbal alternative that can be used in the herbal gargle water is the common garlic. The odorless garlic capsules may be preferred by some individuals; these capsules have the same potency of raw garlic and can be used by those who cannot deal with the smell of raw garlic. Dosage of this herb can be three garlic capsules taken every day at regular intervals.
Tea tree oil - The antiseptic actions of the tea tree oil can also be utilized in the treatment of a throat problem. Gargle using warm water to which five drops of the tea tree oil has been added for maximum relief from the symptoms of a throat infection.
Lemon balm - Use different herbs as infusions in gargling water some herbs that can be used include a tbsp. each of the tincture of the lemon balm along with some brandy. To treat coughs and persistent hoarseness in the throat drink herbal teas made from a combination of herbs to which some non-pasteurized honey has been added, these herbs include some Echinacea herbal extract.
Ginger - the ginger, the garlic, the sage, the goldenseal, the  licorice and the slippery elm in equal measures. ADDITIONAL THINGS YOU MAY DO
The use of topical treatment methods such as
1             using hot wraps around the neck will heal and help relieve the worst symptoms of the condition in an indirect way.
2             To make a hot wrap, carefully soak a cotton cloth in some heated apple cider vinegar and wrap this cloth around the neck when the symptoms are particularly intense.
3             Topical treatments that can also be used include some raw and crushed, heated leaves of cabbage, apply this around the neck along the area of greatest discomfort.
4             A salve made from the arnica can also be applied directly on the neck. Use a dry towel to always keep the neck wrap or compress covered.
5             Another great topical treatment can be made by boiling two lbs. of small  potatoes with the skins on. The boiled potatoes can then be mashed and the mashed paste can be spread on a cotton cloth, this can then be placed while it is still hot, directly on the throat along the affected area. A woolen shawl can also be used to cover the affected area on the neck.
6             Gargle your throat using a solution of concentrated whey (milk plasma) once every hour or if this is not possible at least thrice every day so as to rid the throat of germs and harmful pathogens.
FOODS TO AVOID WITH REFLUX AND THROAT HOARSENESS
Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows into your esophagus after you've eaten. This causes a burning sensation in your chest. Frequent acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, can cause a dry cough, hoarseness, nausea and difficulty swallowing.
ACIDIC FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
You are advised you to avoid acidic foods because your esophagus doesn't have the protective lining that your stomach has, according to Columbia University Health Services. The acids in foods with a low pH could trigger a burning sensation in your esophagus.
FATTY FOODS
Fatty foods slow digestion and delay the emptying of food from your stomach. This increases pressure in your stomach and on the lower part of your esophagus, increasing the likelihood of acid reflux. Particularly fatty foods include red, fried and processed meats, high-fat milk, cheese and ice cream and fried foods, such as doughnuts, potato chips and french fries. Fatty meats and dairy products are also high in saturated fat, which has been linked to high cholesterol, increased inflammation and heart disease.
SPICY FOODS
Spicy foods cause or worsen acid reflux and hoarseness in some people. If they seem to exacerbate your condition, choose mild foods and seasonings. Particularly spicy foods include salsa, miso paste, chili, hot peppers, Asian stir-fries and curries, Mexican dishes and sweet spices, such as spearmint and peppermint.
COFFEE, CAFFEINE AND ALCOHOL
Alcohol and caffeine, including both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, may contribute to GERD symptoms, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Common sources of caffeine include not only coffee, but also energy drinks, soft drinks, black tea, chocolate and coffee-flavored ice cream.

HERBAL REMEDIES FOR HOARSENESS & ACID REFLUX
Some of the people are reactive to the all types of drugs  and all pathyies are restricted to them , they are advised to  use herbal remedies for cure of laryngitis or Hoarseness.
Acid reflux, a condition associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), causes several uncomfortable symptoms, including heartburn, hoarseness, coughing, sore throat and nausea. The condition is caused by a number of factors, ranging from pregnancy to medication to acidic foods, which prevent the esophagus from doing its job to push food down toward your stomach. See your doctor to determine if you need prescription medications. Also consider asking her about herbal remedies to ease the symptoms of acid reflux, including hoarseness and pain.
LICORICE
Licorice root and licorice candy are often used as remedies for acid reflux, heartburn and hoarseness. To combat side effects from acid reflux medications, suggests taking a standardized extract known as deglycyrrhizinated licorice, or DGL. This type of licorice has the natural licorice chemical known as glycyrrhizin, which is associated with side effects, removed.

CRANBERRY
Cranberry supplements may help prevent bacteria from growing in your digestive juices. These bacteria can exacerbate the symptoms of acid reflux. Recommend  two doses of 400 mg of cranberry supplement per day.
PEPPERMINT
A traditional stomach and cough soother, peppermint works well as tea or in capsule form. It also may help the symptoms associated with acid reflux. If you take peppermint as a supplement, use coated tablets to avoid exacerbating heartburn. Peppermint's soothing action also makes it useful for hoarse coughs, according to the medical center.
.
GINGER TEA
For quick relief from the heartburn-like pain of acid reflux, brew some ginger tea, suggests Bill Gottlieb in "New Choices in Natural Healing." Buy ginger tea bags, or use ginger root. Use 1 ½ tsp chopped or shredded ginger root per cup of boiling water. Steep 10 minutes, then strain the ginger and drink.
APPLE OR CARROT JUICE
Herbalist recommends drinking apple or carrot juice to neutralize stomach acid, an aggravating factor of acid reflux. Drink the juices by themselves, or combine them with cooled herbal tea. "heartburn formula" combines 1 tsp each of lemon balm, chamomile and licorice root, ½ tsp slippery elm and ¼ tsp each catnip and fennel seed. Pour 1 ½ cups boiling water over the herbs, steep for 15 minutes, and strain. Combine 1 ½ cups apple or carrot juice and chill the mixture.

CURES FOR A HOARSE VOICE with Home REMEDIES

Some medicinal properties are also already found in the daily life of domestic use they are used as medicine  for easy cure of laryngitis. such as ginger root and power , honey, etc.
